How do I Create a New Turnitin Assignment on Moodle?

First, it is important that you know this is a two step process with an optional third step.  Although the turnitin assignment can be created and modified on Moodle, you must access Turnitin also.

First Step

Picture
1.  Login to your course and turn on editing (top right hand corner).
2.  Click on the small wrench icon next to your turn it in assignment.  (If you have not created the assignment yet, click on this link to create the assignment and then come back).

Picture
3.  Select "yes" in the bottom option in the "general" box.
4.  Submission type should be left to file upload.

Picture
5.  From the drop down menu, choose which option works best for your needs.
6.  You can exclude the bibliography and quoted material to get a more accurate originality report.  ***If you select "No" the percentage will likely be very high.

7.  Select the grade that best meets your needs according to the syllabus.  ***entering the correct grade value here will automatically add this assignment to your grade book for moodle.
8.  Leave the "Common Module Settings" to the default.
9.  The "Restrict Access" box is where you will create the due date.  Sometimes students may want to add his or her paper several days before the due date to check the originality report and then make any changes before the final submission.  You have the ability to allow access in this section.

10.  Again, leave this alone.  If yours is not set to "no groups" please choose from the drop down menu.

11.  Here is a duplicate of step 9 above.  Choose the dates that best fit your needs.  Make a note of these dates, as you will need them again for the second step of this process.
12.  Click "save and return to course."

Step Two

Picture
1.  Click on the turnitin assignment icon on your course (the one that we just created).
2.  The above screen will appear.  Click on the edit icon (shown in the image above).

Picture
3.  Enter the dates from the assignment module that you previously set up.
4.  Set the time that you want to allow submissions, and the time for the final submission.
5.  Enter the grade the same as previously entered.
6.  Click "submit."

Step Three

Why might you need to use step three?  If your students will be uploading his or her assignments, you are done.  Congratulations!

Lets say that you want to manually upload each assignment on behalf of the students in your course.  Or perhaps you have come across an assignment that you are bit suspicious of and want to check the originality. This feature is a great solution for any of the above concerns.

Picture
1.  Click on the assignment icon again from the Moodle page.
2.  Click on "submit paper"
3.  Select the student's name from the drop down menu.
4.  Click browse to upload the student's document from your file picker.
5.  Click "add submission."
