Alliant Email Security Change - Modern Authentication
Dear Alliant Community:
In June 2021 Microsoft was scheduled to limit the permitted methods of access to Microsoft hosted email. Due to a recent uptick in suspicious email activity, Alliant IT discovered that Microsoft did not shutdown all legacy methods and this presented potential vulnerabilities. Due to the risk potential, we enforced the use for modern methods to access Alliant Email and shut-down all insecure legacy methods on January 18. For a limited number of users who are/were still using a legacy method to access Alliant email, you may be presented with a message similar to the one displayed below.

Legacy email access protocols such as; POP, SMTP, IMAP, and MAPI cannot enforce multi-factor authentication MFA. This provides a potential entry point for those with malicious intent to digitally attack accounts that use these outdated methods to access email. A majority of the Alliant community members are using a modern secure method to access their email; however, system reports indicate there are still a fair amount of users who access email via an outdated insecure method.
Listed below are secure and preferred methods to access Alliant Email from a computer or mobile device. If you are not already doing so, you need to establish one of the listed email management options potential inability to access your Alliant email.
PC or Mac:
The Office 365 Outlook desktop client – available for free download and installation to Alliant constituents as part of the Office 365 application suite from the Office 365 portal portal.office.com/
